Air cadets to take their first steps to becoming pilots at Syracuse airport
Syracuse, NY (July 8, 2023) – After a competitive selection process, eight Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets from eight states will be setting their sights on becoming pilots as they gather at Syracuse Hancock International Airport the last week of July for the National Flight Academy hosted by CAP’s New York Wing. During the academy, these cadets will be assigned to four volunteer CAP instructor pilots and will undergo an intense one-week program that is intended to prepare them to safely solo a Cessna aircraft.
Last month, after being selected for the program, the cadets attended an online ground school that prepared them to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s written exam for private pilots. The exam will be administered during the flight academy later this month. During their one-week training program, the cadets will be flying one of CAP’s Cessna aircraft with an instructor. “The goal is to take cadets from no real flight experience to taking off and landing an airplane with the potential of flying the airplane all alone,” according to activity director Lt. Col. Diane Wojtowicz of the Civil Air Patrol.
The academy will be based out of Signature Aviation at 248 Tuskegee Road from July 22 to July 28.
